🎙️ Candidate Opening & Architectural Context
""During an on-call shift, our alerts triggered when a critical Linux production server exhibited this behavior. The interviewer is testing: Filesystem primitives, inodes.. I structure my answer around systematic triage first, root cause analysis second, and permanent remediation third.""

🛠️ Production Runbook & Step-by-Step Resolution

1️⃣

Initial Diagnostics & Root Cause Analysis

  • Hard Link: A hard link is multiple file paths pointing to the exact same underlying inode (data) on the disk. Because they share the same inode, if you delete the original file, the hard link still retains the data perfectly. Hard links cannot span across different disk partitions or filesystems.
  • Soft Link (Symlink): A soft link is a shortcut. It is a completely separate file with its own unique inode, and its contents simply contain the text path pointing to the original file. If you delete the original file, the soft link becomes broken (a "dangling symlink"). Soft links can point across different filesystems and even to directories.

Remediation & Permanent Safeguards
