Senior DevOps / SRE [L2] Docker Must enable BuildKit Production Scenario [L2]

Q: A containerized application needs to call an API server running directly on the Docker host machine (not in a container). Using `localhost` or `127.0.0.1` from inside the container doesn't work. How does the container reach the host?

Inside a container, localhost refers to the container's own loopback interface, not the host's. The container and host have separate netw...

🎙️ Candidate Opening & Architectural Context
""During an image optimization initiative across our services, we solved this exact problem. The interviewer is testing: Container-to-host networking, `host.docker.internal`.. I structure my answer around systematic triage first, root cause analysis second, and permanent remediation third.""

🛠️ Production Runbook & Step-by-Step Resolution

1️⃣

Initial Diagnostics & Root Cause Analysis

Inside a container, localhost refers to the container's own loopback interface, not the host's. The container and host have separate network namespaces.

  • Docker Desktop (Mac/Windows): Use the special DNS name host.docker.internal, which automatically resolves to the host machine's internal IP. Available out of the box.
  • Docker Engine on Linux (20.10+): Add --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway to the run command. host-gateway is a special string that Docker resolves to the host's gateway IP (typically 172.17.0.1).

Remediation & Permanent Safeguards

    image: myapp
    extra_hosts:
      - "host.docker.internal:host-gateway"
  • --network=host mode eliminates the network namespace boundary entirely, but sacrifices container isolation.
